Our trip to Teresienstadt
On November 25 and 26, 2014 we (grades 10/1 and 10/2) went on a two-day study trip to Terezín also called Teresienstadt. Our teachers Ms. Voigt, Mr. Hennig and Mr. Křenek accompanied us.
After our arrival in this small but nice city we checked out our night’s lodgings, which made a nice impression on us. A short time after that we left for our first sightseeing to the old fortress, which, in my opinion, was one of the best guided tours of the whole trip. We were shown impressive fortifications that had been built long before National Socialism and that still made a stable and impregnable impression. Additionally, we were shown different parts of the city. After that we visited the Ghetto Museum, which exhibits relicts from the NS period. In the afternoon we took part in a workshop. We were split into groups and our task was to create a biography for a person who had lived in the Ghetto Teresienstadt. In the evening we could choose between a movie or a reflexion round in which we discussed our experiences from the day.
The second day started with a guided tour through the small fortress that had been used as a prison camp during the NS regime. In addition to that we were also shown the big cemetery and the building in which the deceased had been burnt. There was a second workshop in the afternoon in which we discussed the topic of perpetrators, followers, victims and heroes. Altogether it was a very vivid and informative trip that helped us understand what it had meant to live in the ghetto.
