A German-Czech Encounter: Building Bridges
The day of the German-Czech encounter for elementary students at FSG has been a tradition since 1998 and has always been organized with great commitment and creativity. Students, teachers and the third-graders from local schools were invited to visit our school on June 21, 2016.
The welcome speech by our principal OstD B. Wenzel as well as our bilingual fifth grade’s opening program, which was directed by Ms Kazdová, gave our young guests a first impression of what bilingual and binational education means. At various selected stations representing the subjects of Czech, English, French, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, IT, Art and Music they could gather further impressions accompanied by Czech and German students from our 10th grades. Our visitors could get active playing and performing and took part in experiments and creative workshops.
At the beginning, the third-graders seemed to explore the school with wonder and awe. Our 10th graders helped them venture into this new territory. At the end of the day, after they had been singing the Czech nursery rhyme “Krávy, Krávy“ and taking part in a ‘beginner’s course’ in Czech, Ms Pazderová gave our young guests their first language diplomas, which made them very proud.
Finally, she pointed out that each diploma came with a guide for the first school day in case the students wanted to take part in this bilingual and binational educational program.
Confident remark by a young student from Wehlen: “I’ll do that!”
